A large share of our design clients aren't full-time residents — they're second-home owners who might be on-site once a month, or less. That changes the design brief significantly: the garden needs to look good on arrival and survive neglect between visits, not just look good on installation day.
Plant selection is the biggest lever
Hardy, slow-growing, climate-suited planting matters more here than almost any other design decision. Fast-growing ornamentals that need constant shaping to look tidy will look overgrown and neglected within weeks of a missed visit. Minimise lawn, or commit to maintaining it properly
Lawns are the highest-maintenance element in most gardens and the fastest to look neglected — an unmown lawn reads as "abandoned property" faster than almost anything else. For low-visit-frequency homes, we often recommend reducing lawn area in favour of gravel, groundcover, or hardscaped zones, and reserving lawn only for areas where it's genuinely wanted, backed by a maintenance plan that doesn't depend on the owner being present.
Irrigation has to run without you
A holiday home garden absolutely needs automated, timer-based irrigation — manual watering isn't an option when nobody's there for weeks at a time. Size the system with some margin for dry spells, and consider a rain sensor or moisture-based controller so it doesn't overwater during the monsoon while you're away.
Hardscaping over high-maintenance beds
Well-designed hardscaping — pathways, defined gravel or paved zones, structural planters — holds its appearance far longer than planted beds with no attention. It's often worth allocating more of the design budget to hardscaping and less to high-maintenance ornamental planting for a property that won't get frequent hands-on care.
The maintenance plan is part of the design
None of this replaces the need for some level of ongoing care.
