A garden brief for a beachside property in Candolim looks very different from one for a hillside home in Assagao. Salt-laden wind, sandy free-draining soil, and near-constant sun eliminate a lot of the plants that work fine ten kilometres inland.
What struggles near the coast
Delicate ornamentals with soft foliage tend to scorch and brown at the leaf edges within a season. Plants that need consistently moist, humus-rich soil also underperform in sandy coastal ground unless the soil is heavily amended — which is a maintenance commitment most clients don't want to sign up for indefinitely.
What performs well
- Screw pine (Pandanus) — naturally salt-tolerant, useful as a structural or screening plant
- Beach hibiscus — flowers reliably even in poor sandy soil
- Frangipani (Plumeria) — genuinely thrives on neglect and full sun
- Bougainvillea — the reliable workhorse for coastal color, tolerates salt spray well
- Coconut and areca palms — obvious, but worth stating: they're doing that well near the coast for a reason
- Vetiver grass — excellent for erosion control on sandy slopes
Amending the soil where it's worth it
For feature beds near the entrance or pool deck, it's usually worth the investment to bring in amended soil and commit to regular feeding. For the wider garden, we'd rather select plants suited to what's already there than fight the site indefinitely.
