Test yield before you design anything
The single most important step, and the one most often skipped, is testing the borewell's actual sustained yield — not just whether water comes out, but how much and for how long under continuous draw. A system designed around an assumed yield that turns out to be optimistic will bottleneck the moment more than one zone runs at once, a problem that's expensive to diagnose after installation and much cheaper to avoid before it.
Storage smooths out yield limitations
Even a borewell with a modest sustained yield can support a reasonably ambitious garden if paired with a storage tank — the borewell refills the tank steadily over time, and the irrigation system draws from stored volume rather than directly taxing the borewell's real-time output. This is often the difference between a system that works reliably and one that struggles, for the same borewell.
Seasonal yield variation
Borewell yield in Goa typically drops toward the end of the dry season, sometimes significantly, before recovering once the monsoon replenishes groundwater. A system designed only around wet-season yield will underperform exactly when the garden needs water most — worth testing yield during a dry-season low point, not just whenever it's convenient to test.
Pump sizing matters as much as the borewell itself
An undersized pump wastes the borewell's actual capacity; an oversized one can draw faster than the borewell recharges, effectively creating the same bottleneck a low-yield borewell would. Pump sizing should be matched to tested yield, not guessed from the borewell's diameter or depth alone.
Zoning to protect a limited supply
On properties with a genuinely limited borewell yield, zoning irrigation by priority — keeping high-value or newly planted areas on more frequent, protected zones while less critical areas run on longer intervals — makes a limited water supply go much further than a single blanket watering schedule.
