Almost every lawn conversation in Goa eventually comes down to these two: Mexican grass (Cynodon dactylon, often called doob grass locally) and Bermuda grass. Both handle heat fine — the real differences show up in the monsoon and in how the lawn is actually used.
Mexican grass
This is the default choice for a reason. It forms a dense, fine-textured carpet, tolerates both full sun and partial shade better than most alternatives, and recovers well after monsoon waterlogging as long as drainage is reasonable. It needs more frequent mowing to stay looking sharp, and it's slightly less tolerant of very heavy, constant foot traffic than Bermuda.
Bermuda grass
Bermuda handles wear better — it's the better pick for lawns that see kids, pets, or regular events, and it spreads aggressively enough to self-repair bare patches. The tradeoff is that it goes semi-dormant and browns off faster if watering is inconsistent, and it's less shade-tolerant, so it struggles under tree canopy where Mexican grass would cope fine.
What we actually recommend
For a typical villa garden with some tree cover and moderate use, Mexican grass wins most of the time. For open lawns with heavy activity — resort grounds, event spaces, a garden built around kids playing — Bermuda's durability usually justifies the extra watering discipline it demands.
Neither performs well without decent drainage. If your plot holds water after rain, both grasses will thin out in the same low spots regardless of which one you choose — that's a grading problem, not a grass problem.
Getting the lawn established
New lawns of either type need consistent watering for the first four to six weeks while roots establish, ideally through a proper irrigation system rather than manual watering, which tends to be inconsistent exactly when consistency matters most.
Once established, both need regular mowing, edging, and seasonal feeding to stay dense — thin patches are usually the first sign a lawn has slipped off its maintenance schedule.
